Patricia Patterson

Overview

Rather like a contemporary Virginia Wolfe, Patricia Patterson takes simple dinner conversation and creates art from it. In reverse, she might take fictional color from one of her paintings and paint a wall or a baseboard in her house. For Patterson, art equals life and domestic life equals art. Her paintings are scenarios, reflecting the connectedness of family, friends and the earth.

Patricia Patterson's original contemporary art deals with ordinary life. Her paintings are populated with family, friends, scenes of home and the surrounding landscape. Patricia Patterson moved to San Diego from New York in 1970, and was a Professor of Art at the University of California, San Diego until 1999. For over thirty years Patterson traveled to Ireland and recorded images of rural life.

Her work has been shown in numerous museums including the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, the San Diego Museum of Art, and most recently, MOCA Los Angeles.
