Overview

Quint Contemporary Art is pleased to announce a dynamic new installation and a video work by New York artist, Ryan McGinness. "Pain-free Kittens" will consist of a site-specific mural installation, 5 new paintings on canvas, 2 works on paper and the video "North Star" from his 2002 DVD release Video Happiness.

Ryan McGinness is an international exhibiting artist whose work makes strong social commentary on iconography, language, and historical and contemporary symbolism. McGinness' work consists of an amalgam of icons and symbols in which originals do not exist. Instead, his graphic drawings and personal iconography are replicated, recontextualized, and materialized infinitely across a range of media - from paintings, prints, and installations, to skateboards, clothing, and videos. In 1999, he received critical acclaim for his first book, "flatnessisgod." Since then, six additional books of his works have been published. His next book, "installationview" is scheduled for release fall of 2005 by Rizzoli Press.

Mr. McGinness will be one of the highlighted artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego's TNT event on Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 7pm. He will present a lecture titled "Pain-free Kittens" which will include a Power Point presentation. His work is included in the traveling exhibition, "Beautiful Losers" on view locally at the Orange County Museum of Art through May 15, 2005.

McGinness has been described by the New Yorker as "one of New York's most promising bright young artists." McGinness lives and works in Manhattan.
