Overview

Quint Contemporary Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of the works by San Diego painter Stephen P. Curry.  The exhibition will be open to the public from March 23 through April 21 with a reception for the artist at the gallery on April 12th, 2001, from 6 – 8 pm.  Mr. Curry, a lifelong San Diego resident, studied at Grossmont Community College in El Cajon and the San Francisco Art Institute.  He has exhibited his atmospheric, color-saturated paintings regionally and nationally for over 10 years.

Known for his moody studies of nature – notably plants, trees, fruit and birds, Curry combines the meticulous observation of Renaissance painting with the sensibilities of a contemporary urban botanist.  The resulting environments, whether situated in the outside world or devised in a controlled environment, are darkly mysterious.

The artist’s recent work introduces a new interest in paint-as-object through color panels treated with an experimental glazing technique.  These newest explorations combine Curry’s impressive paint handling technique with a conceptual consideration for optics: the works suggest a real depth, while reflecting the world outside the painted surface.

Mr. Curry has gained national recognition and is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.  Residents of San Diego have followed Curry’s career closely through one person and group exhibitions in our area since 1990, notably Revisiting Landscape, Tabletops and The Next Wave at the California Center for the Arts Museum in Escondido.
