Quint Gallery is pleased to present a new print series and a selection of paintings from San Diego-based artist KELSEY BROOKES. This special event is also the debut of Kelsey Brookes’ new publication: KELSEY BROOKES – PSYCHEDELIC SPACE, where the artist will be on hand to sign books. The new prints and paintings will be on view for one week only: September 5-12, 2015. The special event will take place on Saturday, September 5th from 6-8pm and is open to the public. 

Kelsey Brookes’ new book features a conversation between the artist and lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis. Ryan McGinness created a photo essay about Brookes’ work, an insert by Richard M. Doyle is an icaro in honor of the work, while essays by Hamilton Morris and Leonie Bradbury round out the monograph. McGinness is an artist from New York whose work has inspired Brookes’ own practice, Doyle has a PhD in Rhetoric who is an accomplished writer and poet. Morris is the science editor for Vice Magazine and delves into Brookes’ scientific background, and art historian, Director and Curator of Montserrat College of Art Galleries in Massachusetts, Leonie Bradbury analyzes the aesthetic nature of the paintings.

The new prints stem from four large paintings that were originally exhibited in Quint Gallery’s 2012 exhibition, Serotonin: Happiness and Spiritual States. The oversize prints are titled LSDSerotoninMescaline, and Psilocybin; they are silkscreen on cotton rag stock and were made in an edition of 50. There are an additional thirty-two monoprints made with the Psilocybin painting which were each customized by Kelsey Brookes. The prints are signed, dated and titled by Brookes. Also on view will be several new paintings by Kelsey Brookes including a new series called One Continuous Line.The new paintings are a preview of our upcoming solo exhibition with Kelsey Brookes to be announced in 2016.

Brookes has had solo exhibitions in La Jolla, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, London and Berlin. His work was featured as the cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2012 “I’m With You” 7” records and The Flaming Lips’ 2013 “Stone Roses” LP. Brookes has teamed up with RVCA, VANS, and Insight 51, among others for numerous projects. His paintings are featured in the publications SKULL STYLE: Skulls in Contemporary Art and Design, GO WEST!: Cutting-edge creative in the United States. KELSEY BROOKES: Psychedelic Space is the first monograph of the artist’s artwork and examines three years of work and four solo exhibitions. His work belongs in esteemed private collections, as well as the public permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation.
