Overview
Through July 5th, Quint Gallery presents Gisela Colon’s wall mounted Morph sculpture. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and based in Los Angeles, Colón works within the legacy of the Minimalist and Light & Space artists of the 1960s. She was trained as a painter, but after a mentorship from artist De Wain Valentine, she turned to engineered materials like molded acrylic, carbon fiber, and laminated plastics to create sleek, futuristic forms that are balanced by their ethereal and sometimes intangible edges. These bulbous, glowing “Pods” are filled with layers of brilliant, fluorescent colors that are activated and transformed by their surrounding light conditions.
Colón has exhibited internationally throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Most recently, Colón presented a monumental site-specific installation in the Land Art Biennial, Desert X AlUla 2020 in Saudi Arabia. Gisela Colón’s work resides in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), San Diego, CA; Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Miami, FL; Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs, CA; Grand Rapids Museum of Art (GRAM), Grand Rapids, MI; and the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedalia, MO, amongst others.
