Overview

Quint Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of RYAN MCGINNESS: COMMUNITY IDENTITY STABILITY, which will feature ten new paintings and ten monoprint lithographs from stone, published by Edition Copenhagen. The paintings represent a quiet contemplation by McGinness on his work from the past ten years. They combine elements from past bodies of work into “studio views,” or paintings within paintings. Included are the MindscapesBlack Holes, and Women series. Additionally, this is the first time that McGinness has outfitted his paintings with artist-made frames, each silver- or gold-leafed and painted in the studio. The monoprints are autobiographical works composed of collaged original drawings in McGinness’ signature iconic style. This will be the fourth solo exhibition for the artist at the gallery. There will be a reception, which is open to the public, on Saturday, November 8th from 6-8pm; the artist will be in attendance.

“Ryan McGinness has created a new, seamless, artistic hybrid that is simultaneously painting, design, and mass communication. He is one of the rare artists who is pushing the boundaries of the definition of art and the artist. ”—Jeffrey Deitch, from installationview, published by Rizzoli

The title of the exhibition, COMMUNITY IDENTITY STABILITY, is derived from Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, in which “Community. Identity. Stability.” is the state imposed motto. McGinness’ artworks are made up of his original symbols that embody deeper meaning and reflection, whether on popular or subversive cultures. He employs the visual language of authority (universal icons) and remodels these tools of the state to express more surreal and poetic contemplations of the individual.

Ryan McGinness received a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and worked as the Curatorial Assistant at the Andy Warhol Museum after college. He currently has a solo exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and has been shown in numerous international exhibitions in recent years. McGinness’ works are in several private and public collections including The Charles Saatchi Collection; Norton Family Foundation; Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and UBS Collection, New York.
