Overview

Quint Contemporary Art is very pleased to exhibit new drawings by Manny Farber. The exhibition opens on May 2nd, 2008 with a public reception from 6-8 p.m. and closes on June 14th. Manny Farber, who has been painting for over 50 years, began exhibiting at Quint Contemporary Art in 1985. This will be his sixteenth solo show at the gallery. Comprised of approximately 70 drawings the exhibition will feature works completed over the last year by the 91 year-old artist. The drawings, which are vibrantly colored, expressionistic views of his garden will be hung salon style, pinned to the wall as they are in Manny's studio.

 

Born in Douglas, Arizona in 1917, Farber began painting in the 1930s.  Before joining the faculty of the University of California, San Diego Visual Arts Department in 1969, he was a film critic in New York, writing for the New Republic, the Nation and ARTFORUM.  Known in the 1950s and 1960s for his shaped canvas abstractions, Farber began painting still life's in 1974.  He retired from teaching in 1987 and has been painting at his studio in Leucadia, California ever since.  His solo exhibitions since 1982 have included the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg;  PS1, New York and the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA.
