Overview

Quint Contemporary Art is pleased to announce its seventh solo exhibition of new works by noted abstract painter Gary Lang.

Gary Lang unites the practices of drawing and painting to create dazzling striped paintings that seduce both the eye and the mind. His large scale canvases lay bare the ingredients of painting, color and form, in order to demonstrate their own seemingly simple creation. Working with a straight line, Lang traverses the canvas—sometimes the length and sometimes the width—and repeats this action over and over in a somewhat mechanized repetition. Yet a closer look reveals that these paintings are not hard edged but rather emphatically hand painted. Time then becomes an implicit part of the work as one traces the progression of the line across the picture plane and imagines the artist’s repeated gesture. His colors, sometimes bright to the point of being fluorescent, recall high modernist antecedents while maintaining a certain individuality. This freedom of color choice strikes a pleasant balance with the rather rigorous composition.  Imbued with both graphic and chromatic intensity, Lang’s paintings unfold the process of their own making to question the static nature of most abstract work.

Gary Lang completed his BFA at California Institute of the Arts before receiving his MFA from Yale University. His many solo exhibitions include installations at Galerie Trabant in Vienna, Austria, Brain Gross Fine Art in San Francisco, Stark Gallery in New York and the Haags Gemeentemuseum in the Netherlands. Lang has also been featured in group exhibitions at Idyllwild Arts in California, the Haags Gemeentemuseum, The City Museum of Kurashiki in Kurashiki, Japan and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. His past awards include the International Studio Program Award from the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Fulbright/Hayes Travel Grant. The artist lives and works in Ojai, California.
